As a European Muslim, I was overwhelmed with hearing of the huge
unpublicised role of an advanced Islamic civilisation in Europe over 1000
years. Why is this history missing and where can I learn more?
"It is highly probable that but for the Arabs modern European civilisation would never have arisen at all; it is absolutely certain that but for them, it would not have assumed that character which has enabled it to transcend all previous phases of evolution."
R. Briffault: The Making of Humanity.
"The Miracle of Arabic science, using the word miracle as a symbol of our inability to explain achievements which were almost incredible... unparalleled in the history of the world."
George Sarton It was during the period of high Muslim apogee: 8th-13th centuries that most decisive scientific inventions were made, and the foundations of modern civilisation were laid, scientists and scientific discoveries in their thousands, artistic creativity, great architecture, huge libraries, hospitals, universities, mapping of the world, the discovery of the sky and its secrets, and much more.
It was the time when the names of Al-Biruni, Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Idrissi, Al-Kindi, Ibn Sina, Al-Razi, Ibn Khaldun, Al-Khazin, Ibn al-Haytham, Al-Farabi, Al-Ghazali, Al-Jazari and hundreds more scientists came into being.

Scholars are worthles when all they know is Islam.
And about the advances: muslims DESTROYED the most advanced part of christianity at that time. Burned the library of Alexandria. They saved some scraps, but saved them from themselves not others. What an achivement. Have something else?
The extent of Islamic scientific acheivement is not yet fully understood but it's extremely vast fore the Muslims did not rid themselves of things that the Catholic church did not approve of.
The roots of Islamic science drew primeraly from Persian, Indian, Arab and Greek teachings.
They were well versed in:
Mathematics
Astronomy
Medicine
Psycology
Cosmology (Remember Galileo, his same story never did happen because of this empire).
Geography and Cartography
They were holistic during the Medieval times, the sages would approach science, language, religion and math, etc all as part of one thing. This caused the hakim to most often be poets and writers, skilled in the practises of medicine and science and of course mathematics. It was the training for the masters of all trades.
What have they done? For one, there was no religious opression over science.
- Abu Ishaq ibn Jundub invented a telescope like instrument in the year 767. Galileo caught on in 1442.
- Galen (often considered the second most important philosopher from antiquity) had most of his work trashed by the Romans. If the Arab hadn't collected them and translated them, than his work would have never reached Europe in the eleventh century.
- Hospitals and medical colleges-- which had never found their way in Ancient Greece --were built with wards for yes, both male and females alike. "God has sent a remedy for every disease in the World except death," was a line used by the Prophet (pbuh). These hospitals had lecture halls and libraries.
Yeah, yeah, in other words, there is so much to cover and so little I can say in one post.
Now, for your test because I sincerely have no idea. *sweatdrop* Can you find the 'historical proof' of who burnt down the library of Alexandria. I don't know who did it, but a text or a quote or something would be nice because a gut feeling tells me there's more to that story...
By the way, did you know the Maya invented the zero number 500 years before the Indians (who invented it on their own in 458 AD, before passing it to the Persians and to the Arabs). Flabbergasting
I can only assume that the reasons for Arab landmarks on history not being widely known are similar to the reasons most people don't know that a lot of today's technology and scientific understandings were invented or discovered by women.
